People aspire to be master of many skills and Al Muirhead is one who has accomplished this dream and has no plans of slowing down. Whether it is playing a sweet and melodic trumpet solo, composing and arranging for a big band, small ensemble or orchestra, performing one take sessions on recordings or mentoring young musicians, Al is an inspiration in the Canadian music scene and is known as the "Elder statesman of Jazz Trumpet in Alberta".

Award-winning Canadian pianist and vocalist, Laila Biali, has been garnering world-wide recognition for her music which she has performed at prestigious venues including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tokyo’s Cotton Club, and Carnegie Hall. She has toured with GRAMMY award winners Chris Botti, Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega, and recorded with and supported international icon, Sting.

Vern Dorge - woodwinds -- Juno nominee

We are thrilled to welcome home our own Vern Dorge.

Internationally respected saxophone, flute, and woodwind specialist VERN DORGE has been a mainstay on the Toronto jazz scene since relocating here from Lethbridge, Alberta in 1974, to become a featured soloist with major artists including ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, and ‘The Boss Brass’.

He has performed with highly acclaimed international artists including Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Aaron Neville, Gino Vannelli, Diana Krall, and Herbie Hancock, and played with revered Toronto leaders including Guido Basso, Doug Riley, Howard Cable, Domenic Troiano, and Moe Ko?man. He can be heard on countless jazz recordings, and has held long-running pit-band engagements in many of the hit theatrical productions playing Toronto.

Chris Andrew - piano - TD Grand Jazz Award Winner
There are very few hats that Chris Andrew doesn’t wear. As one of Canada’s finest pianists, Chris brings ingenuity, highly acclaimed technical abilities and passionate performances to the musical table, making it a table other musicians want to join.

In fact the very talented Andrew has graced the stage with Josh Redman, Paquito D’Rivera, Thomas Chapin, Kirk MacDonald, Sunny Fortune, Joe LaBarbera, PJ Perry and Brad Turner.

He is also a member of the award-winning contemporary jazz ensemble the Hutchinson Andrew Trio, latin jazz sensation Bomba! and urban acoustic group Sillan & Young. Summer 2013 saw Chris earn the TD Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. He was also awarded the Galaxie Rising Star Award at Canada's 2008 National Jazz Awards.

Kodi Hutchinson - bass - TD Grand Jazz Award Winner
One of the most active musicians in Western Canada, double bassist Kodi Hutchinson is man who wears many hats. As well as running his own musical group the Hutchinson Andrew Trio, CKUA radio show A Time for Jazz, and record label Chronograph Records, Kodi is a sought after side-man on both double bass and electric bass.

Described by those who know him as creative, introspective and just a happy-go-lucky guy, Kodi started his musical career in jazz while attending the University of Calgary. He received his Bachelor's degree in Commerce in 1995, but followed his true passion and jumped into playing music full-time shortly thereafter. Since those early beginnings, Kodi has established himself as one of the top call bassists in Alberta. He has worked with artists such as P.J. Perry, Lee Konitz, Oliver Jones, Julian Priester, Walt Weiskopf, Karl Schwonik, Dave Restivo, Owen Howard, Hugh Fraser, Paul Tobey, Ingrid Jensen, Denny Christianson, Ross Taggart, Mike Murley, Marc Antoine, Nick Colionne, Beat Kaestli, Bill Anschell, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre Calgary and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks.

Kodi's wide range of musical tastes have allowed him to tour throughout North America and Europe with such groups as Karl Schwonik, Clanterra, Destino, Johanna Sillanpaa as well as Sillan & Young. The Hutchinson Andrew Trio won the prestigious 2013 TD Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and all three of their albums, ‘Prairie Modern’ (2013), ‘Music Box’ (2008) and ‘Lost but not forgotten’ (2006) were nominated for the Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Recording. His boutique jazz record label, Chronograph Records, was nominated for Independent Record Label of the Year in 2009 & 2011 – a testament to his hard work and passion for promoting Western Canadian artists.

Al has recorded as a sideman on 26 albums and recently released his first solo album featuring himself and old friend Tommy Banks called It's About Time. The critically acclaimed album received a JUNO nomination in 2016. Al has just released his 3rd Album called Northern Adventures - Canada Sessions 1. For this album, he assembled the finest jazz musicians in Canada and created another masterpiece. Vern Dorge - woodwinds For decades now, Lethbridge native Vern Dorge has been one of the busiest woodwind specialists on the Toronto scene. His performance credits range from "Blood Sweat and Tears" to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin and so many more "A" list musical luminaries. In addition to his performing and recording career, Vern has been in the orchestra pit for countless musical theatre productions. We are so excited to welcome Vern back home.
